About the figures
The distance and driving time are worked out on OpenStreetMap road data from the Adelaide GPO to Melbourne’s centre, in October 2026. Google Maps may differ by a few kilometres. A removal truck takes longer than a car, and its driver must take rest breaks, so ask for the delivery window when you get your quote.
Removalists Adelaide to Melbourne: what the move includes
Moveall Interstate is Moveall’s door-to-door interstate service. On the Melbourne route that means:
- A quote made for your home. Moveall’s customer care team asks about your bedrooms and living areas, the access at your Adelaide home and your Melbourne home, and any heavy or bulky pieces, then emails a quote. An in-home quote is free.
- Packing if you want it. Moveall’s Wrap & Pack service supplies the boxes and materials and packs your home, from clothes and books to fragile items, TVs and artwork.
- Careful loading. Furniture wrapped in moving blankets and loaded to Moveall’s strict handling and packaging procedures.
- The trip. Your home travels to Melbourne by road or rail freight, whichever your quote sets out.
- Delivery. Furniture and cartons carried into the Melbourne home and set in the rooms you name.

The road from Adelaide to Melbourne, stage by stage
Most of the 726 km is one long run east on the inland highway. Knowing the stages helps you plan your own drive, and explains why the truck’s timing is not the same as yours.
- Through the Hills. The South Eastern Freeway (M1) climbs out of Adelaide through the Adelaide Hills, towards Mount Barker, about 80 km of the route on route data.
- To Tailem Bend. From the end of the freeway the route follows the A1 for about 84 km to Tailem Bend, where the Dukes Highway begins.
- The Dukes Highway. 190 km of highway from Tailem Bend to the Victorian border east of Bordertown, part of the link between Adelaide and Melbourne.
- The Western Highway. Across the border the same road becomes the Western Highway, which carries on through western Victoria. The A8 between the two states makes up about 408 km of the trip.
- Into Melbourne. The last stretch is the Western Freeway (M8), about 137 km, into Melbourne’s west and the city.
If you are driving the car yourself while the truck carries the house, nine hours is the bare driving time. With fuel, food and rest stops, most people plan a full day, or split it with a night on the way.

Moving from Adelaide to Melbourne: an eight-week plan
A move to Melbourne is often tied to a job start, a school term or a settlement date. Working back from that date keeps it calm.
Eight to six weeks out
- Get your quote. Walk every room, the garage and the shed, and list what is going.
- Decide on packing: all of it, the fragile things, or none.
- Start clearing out what you will not take. Every carton you do not pack is one less to move 726 km.
Four weeks out
- Confirm the moving date and the delivery address.
- Ask the Melbourne building or real estate agent about lifts, loading and parking for the truck.
- Book your own travel: the drive, or flights and somewhere to stay until the furniture arrives.
The last week
- Finish packing, empty drawers and wardrobes, and label each carton with its room.
- Use up or give away fresh food, and do not pack pot plants: the truck is no place for them on a long run.
- Pack a bag for the days in between, and a first-night box for the bedrooms and kitchen.
The full version is the interstate moving checklist.
The Melbourne end: access, parking and stairs
Moveall asks about the access at both homes because the far end is often the harder one. A terrace with a narrow front gate, a townhouse with internal stairs, or an apartment with one lift and a booked loading dock all change how the truck is unloaded and how long it takes. Tell us early about:
- stairs at the new home, and whether large pieces will fit through the doors and round the turns;
- lifts and loading docks, and whether the building books them;
- where a truck can stop in the street, and any parking rules your new council or building sets;
- a long walk from the kerb to the front door.
The more the quote knows about the Melbourne home, the closer moving day will run to plan.
Interstate removalists Adelaide to Melbourne: questions to ask
Whoever you book, get these answered in writing first:
- What exactly does the quote include, and what costs extra on the day?
- Will my home travel by road or by rail?
- What is the delivery window for Melbourne?
- What cover do you hold, and how do I insure my belongings in transit?
- When is payment due?
Moveall’s answers: the quote relies on your inventory, and items added on the day cost extra; road or rail as your quote sets out; the delivery window is given for your move; Moveall holds $20 million public liability cover, so ask us about transit insurance for your belongings; and Moveall’s guide says full payment for an interstate move is made on the day of the move.
Leaving Adelaide: the last things to sort
A few jobs are easy to forget when the whole house is in boxes. Most of them take a phone call or a form, and they are much harder to do from Melbourne.
- Utilities. Book the final readings for power, gas and water at the Adelaide home for the day after the truck leaves, and the connections at the Melbourne home for the day before it arrives.
- Internet. Ask your provider how long a move takes to set up; some need a technician at the new address.
- Mail. Arrange mail redirection, and change your address with your bank, your employer, your health fund and your insurers.
- Rentals. If you are leaving a rental, book the final inspection and plan the cleaning for after the furniture has gone.
- Licence and registration. Victoria has its own rules and time limits for transferring a licence and registering a car brought from another state. Check them with Victoria’s transport authority before you go.
- Schools and doctors. Ask for copies of school reports and medical records to take with you.
None of these slow the truck down, but each one left until Melbourne turns into a long phone queue in your first week.
