A move from Sydney to Adelaide covers 1,374 km of road, from the Hume Motorway out of Sydney to the Sturt Highway into South Australia. Removalists Sydney to Adelaide: what Moveall does
- Quotes the move. Moveall’s customer care team asks about your bedrooms and living areas, the access at your Sydney home and your Adelaide home, and any heavy or bulky items, then emails a quote made for your move.
- Packs, if you want it. Moveall’s Wrap & Pack service supplies the boxes and packing materials and packs your approved household items, from clothes and books to fragile items, TVs and artwork.
- Loads it carefully. Furniture is wrapped in moving blankets and loaded to Moveall’s strict handling and packaging procedures, with extra team members and equipment for heavy pieces such as a piano.
- Sends it by road or rail. Moveall names both for interstate moves; your quote sets out which.
- Delivers it into your Adelaide home. Furniture and cartons are carried in and set in the rooms you name.
The Sturt Highway, the Riverland and fruit fly
The road from Sydney enters South Australia on the Sturt Highway and runs through the Riverland before it reaches Adelaide. PIRSA, South Australia’s primary industries department, keeps permanent restrictions on bringing produce and plant material into South Australia and into the Riverland Pest Free Area, because of fruit fly.
- PIRSA says some fruit, vegetables, plants, plant products and other items cannot be brought into South Australia from interstate, and that New South Wales has its own list of requirements on PIRSA’s page.
- It says to eat or dispose of fruit and vegetables at risk from fruit fly before entering South Australia or the Riverland.
- It says people are fined if caught with restricted items at Yamba quarantine station, or at random roadblocks set up after the disposal bins.
For the removal load and the car
Don’t pack fresh fruit, vegetables or plants for a move into SA. PIRSA restricts many of them, and Yamba quarantine station checks vehicles. If you are driving across, finish the fruit before the border or use the disposal bins.

Planning both ends: a Sydney apartment to an Adelaide home
Many people moving from Sydney leave an apartment or a terrace and arrive at an Adelaide house with a driveway, or the other way round. Moveall asks about the access at both homes for that reason. Give us the details for each end:
| Sydney home | Adelaide home | |
|---|---|---|
| Building | Strata rules for moves, booked lift times, lift padding | For city apartments, the building’s rules and the loading dock |
| The truck | Where it can stop in the street or the dock height | Driveway, street parking, any steep or narrow approach |
| Inside | Stairs, lift size, corridor turns | Stairs, door widths, which rooms are upstairs |
| Timing | Lease end or settlement time | Key handover time on delivery day |
In the Adelaide city centre, we check parking and loading rules with the building and the council before moving day. Note that vehicles cannot enter Rundle Mall at set hours on every day of the week under City of Adelaide rules, which matters only for a home with no other access.

Packing in Sydney for the trip west
A Sydney to Adelaide load spends days in a truck or a rail container, so it needs packing that keeps its shape. Moveall’s terms ask that loose items are packed in cartons and furniture is emptied of loose items before moving day, whoever does the packing. If you pack yourself:
- use new, strong cartons in a few standard sizes so they stack evenly;
- keep heavy things such as books and tools in small boxes and light things in large ones;
- fill every carton to the top with padding so it cannot crush;
- wrap glasses, plates and ornaments one at a time;
- label each carton with the Adelaide room it goes to and what is inside.
If time is short in Sydney, Wrap & Pack takes the whole job: Moveall supplies the boxes and materials and packs your approved household items, so the home is ready for the truck when you get back.
After the truck arrives: the South Australian paperwork
Moving into South Australia starts a few clocks. None are urgent on delivery day, but they are easier to do in your first month than your third.
| What | When | How |
|---|---|---|
| Transfer your NSW driver’s licence | Within 3 months of moving to SA | At a Service SA centre; a photo is taken and the card comes by post |
| Register your car in SA | Within 3 months; an interstate-registered car can be driven in SA for up to 90 days | Through Service SA |
| Keep your SA address up to date | Within 14 days of any later change of address | Online through a mySAGOV account in a web browser, or at a Service SA centre |
| Update your electoral enrolment | Once you have lived at the new address for a month | With the AEC |
The article on licence, rego and address changes after moving to SA covers each one in more detail.
Getting yourself to Adelaide
At about 16.5 hours of driving, Sydney to Adelaide is two long days in the car. Moveall does not list car transport as a service, so if the car is coming, most people drive it or book a car carrier separately. If you fly, plan to arrive a day before the delivery window so you can collect keys and sort the power, water and internet. Either way, keep documents, medicines and chargers with you, and bring bedding for the first nights in case the furniture is still on the road.
Price, payment and insurance
What shapes the price of a Sydney to Adelaide move is the home itself: the rooms and their contents, the access at both ends, heavy or bulky items, packing, and whether the load goes by road or rail. Moveall’s terms say a fixed-price quote relies on the inventory list from the quote, and items added on the day cost extra. Moveall’s own guide says full payment for an interstate move is made on the day of the move.
Moveall holds $20 million public liability cover. That is not insurance for your belongings in transit, so ask us about transit insurance for your belongings when you get your quote. The article on transit insurance for an interstate move explains the difference.
