The removal truck is the big part of an interstate move, but it is not the last part. Once you are living in South Australia, a few rules start their clocks: your driver’s licence, your car’s registration, your address with Service SA and your electoral enrolment. None of them are hard. All of them are easier to do in your first month than your third. This article sets out each one as Service SA and the AEC describe it, as read in October 2026.

| What | Deadline | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Transfer an interstate driver’s licence | Within 3 months of moving to SA | Service SA |
| Register an interstate car | Within 3 months; it can be driven in SA on interstate registration for up to 90 days | Service SA |
| Update your address after a later change | Within 14 days of the change | Service SA |
| Update your enrolment | Once you have lived at the new address for a month | AEC |
Your driver’s licence: 3 months
Service SA’s rule is plain: if you have moved to South Australia and hold a licence from another state or territory, you must transfer to a South Australian licence within 3 months. The transfer is done in person at a Service SA centre. A photo is taken, a fee applies ($22 as shown on Service SA’s page in October 2026), and the new card arrives by post within about 3 weeks.
- Take your current interstate licence, your identity documents and something showing your new SA address.
- Allow time for the photo at the counter.
- Keep your interstate licence until the SA card arrives, as Service SA directs.
Your car’s registration: 3 months, and the 90-day rule
Service SA says that if you have moved to SA from interstate, you need to register your vehicle in SA within 3 months. It also says a vehicle with interstate registration can be driven in SA for up to 90 days, and that this includes visitors. In practice, that gives you the first few months to settle in, but registration should be on the list early: diarise it on the day the truck is unloaded.
Your address: 14 days after any change
Once you hold SA documents, Service SA’s 14-day rule applies to any later move: you must update your address within 14 days of the change. One update with Service SA changes the address on:
- your driver’s licence, provisional licence or learner’s permit;
- your boat licence;
- your disability parking permit;
- vehicle registrations, including cars, caravans, motorbikes and trailers;
- boat registrations.
The update is done online through a mySAGOV account in a web browser (not the app), or in person at a Service SA centre. The new address shows on the mySAGOV digital licence straight away; the physical card shows it at the next renewal, unless you order a replacement.
Your enrolment: after a month
The Australian Electoral Commission says enrolment is compulsory for Australian citizens aged 18 and over who have lived at their address for a month, and that you must keep it up to date when you move. You can be enrolled at only one address. Update your enrolment with the AEC once you have lived at the new address for a month.
Leaving South Australia instead?
These are South Australia’s rules. If you are moving from Adelaide to another state, the new state sets its own deadlines for licences and registration: check them with its transport authority before you go.
Service SA’s page was last updated on 31 August 2026 when it was read for this article. Check it again before you act, in case anything has changed, and ask at the Service SA centre if your situation is unusual, such as a licence from overseas as well as interstate.
A simple order for your first months in SA
- Week one: connect utilities, unpack, and book a Service SA visit for the licence transfer.
- First month: transfer the licence, and start the car registration.
- After a month at the address: update your enrolment with the AEC.
- Before 90 days: have the car on SA registration.
- Any later move within SA: update Service SA within 14 days.
Planning the move itself
If the move into South Australia is still ahead of you, the removal pages on this site cover each route in: Melbourne to Adelaide removalists, Sydney to Adelaide removalists, Brisbane to Adelaide removalists and Perth to Adelaide removalists. For how Moveall plans any move, read interstate removalists in Adelaide, and for the city, the guide to moving to Adelaide.
One more rule worth knowing before you load the truck: South Australia restricts many fruits, vegetables and plants from other states because of fruit fly. The article on fruit fly and WA quarantine rules for movers explains it.
